ITYM "proposals", not "designs". None of those paper spaceships had more than a few sliderules' worth of "design" behind them.
Thank you, proposals is a better word. Though, the ones I have in mind, at least one basically had the basic moldline of the present shuttle. I'd quote the page on Jenkins, but that's 400 miles away. :-)
And yes, I don't want to appear like I'm going down the Bob Haller route here. My point is that there was thought given to the concept of a "shelter" and rejected, for a variety of reasons.
