This problem calls for a better treatment than you are
considering. I do not know how much data you can get
on the various possible causes, some of which are
certainly not observable.
In any case, I suggest you find a good theoretical
statistician with whom you can discuss the problem
in person, and possibly more than once. You will
have to produce the model; beware of the statistician
oversimplifying it.
