definition of a shape parameter

Location, scale, and rate parameters are all easily defined in a pdf.
E.g.,
theta is a scale parameter in the pdf for X if the distribution of
X/theta is
free of theta. Is there a similar definition for a shape parameter?
The
only thing I can find is "changing the value of a shape parameter
changes
the shape of the density." Is there something more technical?
