function arguments

I have a very simple question for most people in this group, but it has
puzzled me for quite awhile. For the expression f(x|y), I am sure the
vertical bar refers to x given the condition of y. But how about f(x;y)?
Sometimes I found functional expression involving "," ";" and "|" at the
same time. How should I translate them?
Thanks for your help.
