Hello,
For those academics that have performed expert witnessing for lawyers:
what hourly rate did you charge?
About what the Watergate lawyers charged their clients back in 1973,
$300 per hour.
When I was approached by a lawyer in a case related to another case
in which I had already acted as the ONLY expert witness for the
plaintiff who had won and collected $1,500,000 (USD), he hired
some cheaper "experts" because he said he makes only $225 an
hour. :-)
How much an "expert witness" is worth depends on what's at stake
and the likelihood of winning AND collecting (the latter is by far
the biggest uncertainty in the assessment of risk and cost in
litigations).
Expert witnesses in non-litigatous situations could include such
jobs as being paid an honorarium to review a book for the
publisher on a book submitted by an author for consideration
for publication, because you're considered an expert in THAT
area by the publisher..
For such, I've charged Wiley the equivalent rate of $1 an hour
(or less) based on the pre-agreed amount of honorarium. :-)
