Hello!
Now that null hypothesis blossoms in all threads I would like to add
another one. I understand the acceptance part of alternative
hypothesis, but I am sometimes encountered in situation when my
goal is to prove null hypothesis. Example?
Simple. You NEVER prove a null hypothesis.
We have two diets, medicaments, ... say placebo and test group and
would like to prove that they do not differ. How should one deal with
this issue?
You can never "prove" that in the classical hypothesis setting. :-)
You can always REJECT the hypothesis that they have the same effect.
But, then this surely lacks some "power" for data analysis. I can prove
the difference, but not no difference. I know that many say, that if
alternative is not accepted there is no difference, but this is not
true - threads on "Who invented null hypothesis" said enough on this
matter. How the ... can than research in say medicine tell us that
cure1 is good enough as cure2?
