MINITAB: How to extract text from text

Hi all,

I have a column with three letter code: AHT, ATT, BHW, BUK, ..... The
first letter states main purpose while the others clarify the thing.

I want make two new columns that reads A,A,B,B and HT, TT, HW, UK and
so on

In the excel the task is simple: the functions LEFT and RIGHT make what
I need.

How to do it in the minitab?
