The Position:
RTI International seeks a decisive, energetic leader with demonstrated
leadership, statistical and administrative skills for the position of
Division Vice President (DVP) of the Social Sciences Research Division
within the Statistics and Epidemiology unit. RTI requires a mature,
poised individual who can be a compelling leader and representative of
the Social Sciences Research Division both internally and externally.
The DVP reports directly the Unit Vice President for Statistics and
Epidemiology, Sally C. Morton, Ph.D.. As part of the senior Statistics
and Epidemiology team, the DVP shares responsibility for long-range
strategic planning for the entire unit.
The Social Sciences Research Division is one of two in the Statistics
and Epidemiology unit. The Division consists of approximately 100
research staff with professional degrees in statistics, biostatistics,
psychometrics, and related disciplines, as well as experts in protocol
management and project administration and related support fields.
Research staff is arrayed across five programs: Education Research;
International Studies; Mapping and Sampling Services; Program
Evaluation and Outcome Measurement; and Survey Research. The Program
Managers for these five programs, as well as three senior staff report
directly to the DVP.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide a vision and leadership for sustained, long-term growth of a
balanced portfolio of research projects in the Division.
· Expand RTI's scientific reputation as a major contributor to
research in statistical methodology.
· Serve as the principal liaison for the Division to other RTI
entities and to the statistics profession externally.
· Integrate statistical capabilities and competencies with domain
area expertise throughout RTI.
· Create a workplace environment that fosters collaboration,
teamwork, and the integration of staff from diverse technical and
substantive backgrounds.
· Plan and implement programs for recruitment, training, development
and succession planning to assure that the Division's capabilities
and resources meet present and future needs in an environment that
supports staff career development.
· Establish priorities and procedures by which to allocate staff and
other resources for maintaining client relations, developing proposals,
conducting projects, and fostering staff development and training.
· Assume overall responsibility for the Division's projects,
budgets, schedules and quality by establishing standards and procedures
to ensure adequate project management and review.
· Establish effective organizational relationships among staff
located across multiple sites and geographic locations.
Professional and Personal Qualifications:
· A doctorate in statistics, biostatistics, or related field.
· Demonstrable track record of leadership in developing and
sustaining a climate that fosters growth in research funding, staff
capabilities, and scientific excellence and reputation.
· A record of scientific publication and stature, and of
participation in major professional societies or associations.
· Proven ability in managing a large, multidisciplinary professional
research and support staff conducting contract and grant-supported
research.
· Extensive experience in working with clients that fund research in
the social sciences, including federal agencies, private foundations,
and/or the commercial sector.
· Success in business development and obtaining research funding from
a broad range of client agencies and other funding sources.
· Excellent skills in communication, negotiation, compromise, and
building consensus within and between groups.
· Willingness to relocate to the Research Triangle Park area
(Raleigh/Durham/ Chapel Hill area).
