Odds ratio in x-sectional studies

A very basic question.......

If the OR is interpreted as the odds of disease given expsoure in
longitudinal studies and the odds of exposure given disease in case
control studies - what is the correct interpretation for cross
sectional studies? Since we have exposure and disease as the same
time we can't be sure either came first.

I have assumed that it is still odds of exposure given disease. But
most papers I see don't even bother with these interpretation
distinctions.

Please help...............
