Do NOT implement first! First try to build model, using for example R or
other freely available software. You could also consider buying some

here, as my company expects me to stay within the bounds of Excel.

Good. R can interface with Excel especially if you use Windows environment.

If you have any suggestions for introductory texts or software, please
let me know.

www.r-project.org is what I could suggest. Maybe if you provide us
with more details...?
