Hi,
I have the following question about deriving an analytical/mathematical
expression for the PDF of a random variable from gathereing statistics.
Please e-mail me eyh5@ece.cornell.edu if you're able to answer it.
I've gathered a bunch of statistics for a random variable, and have
come up with a statistical probability density function of it, and it
seems to resemble the heavy-tailed distribution. I want then to be able
to obtain an analytical expression for the PDF of this random variable.
I'm wondering if anybody has had experience with both S-PLUS and
MS Excel. If so, could you tell me which one would give a more accurate trendline
with an expression expression given the statistical PDF curve? I'm using
Excel right now and just started learning S-PLUS.
Also, I've noticed that in Excel, the mathematical expression for the
same set of data varies if the x-axis range changes. For example, the
expresion I got for the "power fit" trendline when the x-axis is from 0 to
60[sec] is quite different from if the x-axis is from 0 to 120[sec]. Could
someone explain this difference to me? And also, would this phenomenon
appear in S-PLUS as well?
Thanks.
