Russell has pretty much covered it.
The way the hierarchy works is standard enough that it's not hard to
work out that stat.math is in some sense "math within stats", which I
implies mathematical statistics.
I just wanted to add that my post was in no way intended as a flame.
We do get off topic posts from time to time, and if we're going to get
them them anyway, I'll happily take yours over most other off-topic
posts.
However, if you're looking for more responses, you'll do better in a
more relevant group.
sci.stat.math probably isn't the very best term for what the group
contains, and given the level of cross posting among sci.stat.*, I
think we're probably better off with stats in one group personally, but
there are other reasons to keep them apart.
What happened, back in '93 was a rearrangement of previously existing
groups (quoting the vote result post):
the newsgroup becomes
sci.math.stat sci.stat.math
bit.listserv.edstat-l sci.stat.edu
bit.listserv.stat-l sci.stat.consult
bit.listserv.sas-l comp.soft-sys.sas
bit.listserv.spssx-l comp.soft-sys.spss
I read sci.math.stat back before then, but I didn't post much until
after the shift to the 3 sci.stat groups (I tended to hang around in
sci.math more before then).
Some current sci.stat.* regulars were around back then, including Rich
Ulrich and Herman (who both voted in the poll on the above changes); I
didn't vote, mostly because I didn't feel I read sci.math.stat enough
at the time to judge the merits of the reorganisation (and I read the
bit.listserv groups even less), but I guess the reorganisation did
achieve something, because I started reading the stat groups a lot more
after that, and soon started particpating.
