The SPSS group is presently comp.soft-sys.stat.sps -- I read once
that the SAS group rejected a similar name, since the SAS
package is proud of not being limited to "statistics".
("Report generation" has long been an important
application for SAS.)

The earliest post Google finds for me was July 8, 1994, and
I made relatively few posts through the end of 1995.
I know that I voted on some groups or some names, at some
early time, but I'll be a little surprised if it was in 1993.
(It is possible, if "Ulrich" did not show up as an identifier
for my first posting Username. Did you find the poll, or
was that a guess?)

My name should be in some archive of "who voted" for
something, somewhere. I remember learning about the
formal voting process, for creating groups in the sci.*
hierarchy. We haven't done that in a long time.
