Well, the R computing package (http://www.r-project.org)
is easy to use, has a large, active user community,
many add-on packages, and it is free as in free beer and
as in free speech. There are precompiled binaries for
Windows and Linux and probably other platforms.
I have used R for both very small problems (in which I was
mostly just trying out different ideas) and moderate sized
problems (analysis of data sets with about 100 variables
and 100,000 records).
R has linear regression built-in. Other forms of regression
are probably available as add-on packages.
