Re: selecting outcome based on known related probabilities

I should apologize for my poor choice of words. I'm many years removed from college, where I used to do a lot more work with probability, statistics, and other maths. My career took a different path, and so now my work with probability and the like is a hobby. By "higher-order", I was referring to any probability formula that I could use to take the likelihoods of letters following another and come to a solution which would reasonably predict the likelihood of a certain letter following the previous letter combinations.
Since it has been a while since I've looked at this stuff, it may be a simple formula which I need to apply. Or there may be more complex formulas that would produce more accurate results. I would appreciate any suggestions.
(I understand completely what you are saying concerning using words to predict words that follow; however, that is not my goal. I'm strictly looking at letters and their patterns in English.)
