calculate it, without disclosing their own salaries?

One person enters a random number on a calculator and add his salary to it.
They pass the calculator around, each person adding his salary. The first
person substracts the original random number and does the average.

How does one calculate the mean for a set of random variables, if one
does not know:
1. the value of the variables, or
2. the parameters (i.e. mean, std dev) of the distribution?

One doesn't. A plurality working in combination can.
