Luis A. Afonso and Old Mac User, I have a much more constructive
suggestion for you to contribute, not only to the three sci.stat.*
statistics newsgroups, but to ALL newsgroups where there are those
misguided souls who think that a MODE is an AVERAGE or MEAN.

For other groups, at least I have some sympathy for their absence
or lack or education in elementary statistics. But for groups resided
by many STATISTICIANS, it's a bit too much to stomach the nonsense
spread by one statistical Quack Richard Ulrich!

Why don't you TWO, each explain in your own way what a statistical
MODE is, and then explain why it is NOT an average of any kind.

And for BOTH of you, you can make good use of qbasic programming
to program and print some values of some BETA distributions in the
(0,1) interval, say at increments of .01 (or even .05) to show the beta
pdf for alpha = beta = 1/2, and perhaps a few other beta pdfs where
alpha < 1 and beta < 1 that have MODES at the endpoints and
NOWHERE near the mean of alpha/(alpha + beta).

The Wikipedia webpage

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_distribution

should provide you with ALL the information you'll need, to explain to
the poor souls, that the MODE is NOT an AVERAGE.

I think that will be a valuable contribution, not so much for Richard
Ulrich, who is basically hopeless, but for the OTHER readers who might
be innocently be mislead by Ulrich's incessant arguments for his ERRORS
of definition and meaning.

You Qbasic programming of VALUES of various beta distributions that are
U-shaped or J-shaped will help the other readers who are unfamiliar
with
that well-known family of distributions, to give the final blow, to
Richard
Ulrich's and at least anothere two or three in these groups who remain
ignorant, uneducated, and obnoxious about the statistical MODE.

As one famous poster in this groups has said, "It we don't teach them,
who will?" or something to that effect.
