Hello espyrian,
I think your suggestion is very reasonable. The issue is how to assign
the weightage in order to standardise the data based on age. Similarly
in cash flow scenario, we can 'standardise' the values by using Present
Value (or annual value) through method of Time Value of Money.

When epidemiologists compare morbidity rates between regions they will
generally age standardise the data. This allows for a fairer
comparison between populations that may have different age structures.
I'm wondering if it's possible to weight your data using a similar
approach?
.
