condensed stats book(s)

Sorry in advance. I know these "can you recommend a book" questions
can be irritating. I checked the group, but I couldn't quite find
what I was looking for.
I'm in need of getting up to speed on up to intermediate (or semi-
advanced) stats in a relative hurry. I've never taken a formal stats
class, but I probably know the basics of probability and stats up
through a first course or so, but not too much beyond that.
I have no trouble finding textbooks on the subject, but I want
something (very) condensed and practical (that will double as a
reference), and most books are are wordy and dilute. I'm looking for
a no-B.S. book. (e.g., spending 10 pages on variance is idiotic.)
I'm well educated (degrees in math and physics, including a Ph.D. in
theoretical physics from a top-5 univ.) so I don't need a lot of hand-
holding and I'm happy to pay for the right book(s).
Can anyone recommend a book or books? I would be deeply grateful.
(Condensed intro-level books are also welcome, since I can use them as
a reference.)
I'll be working in algorithmic trading in the not-too-distant future,
if it makes any difference. Thanks for any suggestions.
.
