I find this strange given that R is supposed to be popular? Would you think
there ought to be a group for R and why is there no one yet?

There are a bunch of R-related newgroups which however don't seem to
make it to the general usenet feeds: see on the main R page,
(http://www.r-project.org/) on the left, under Mailing lists.
