Hello,
Two inch eyepieces are used with amateur telescopes where it is
common to use only one eyepiece.. Two inch eyepieces are desirable for
this application because the larger eyepiece provides a larger exit
pupil and provides more light for viewing faint astronomical objects
Microscopes do not need a large exit pupil because the light levels in
microscope images are great enough to cause the .human pupil to become
smaller. .
Two inch eyepieces in a binocular head would be very difficult
physically.. The distance between human eyes is typically 50 to 70mm.
Mine is 68mm. The outside diameter of my two inch 50mm plossl
eyepiece is 55mm. If two eyepieces of this size were set in a
binocular head with interpupillary distance equal to 68mm the space
between the eyepieces would be 18mm. The space between the eyepieces
would be too small for my nose to fit.
I have two Leica microscopes that use the 30mm 10X/21B eyepieces. The
10X/21B eyepieces have an outside diameter of 43mm The clearance
between the two eyepieces is slightly less than one inch. The Leica
30mm eyepieces constantly rub my nose.
