Whats bad about the B and L Balplan.... Just about everything. I had a
very good friend that worked for B and L for a long time. He, under B and L
orders, got a big demo at the CDC to show the new 'scope. It was supposed
to have interference filters and be cooler than anything. When it arrived
it had stained filters and was not cool. Period. Look a Balplan works in
that it makes little things look real big but as a good microscope for an
amateur it's a waste of everybodys time.

Lomo is alright, not great. In the US you need to be careful, there have
been some very disreputable dealers. Mostly the problems are design not QC.
The design is straight out of the 60's, the design criteria is add another
piece until it works. Lomo has gotten better though, it still isn't as good
    as the big 4.
