OTOH, when an interested person actually is following a thread, and retentive
bottom-posters fail to trim their posts, you end up with a narrative that
reads:
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?
A: >Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?
Top-posting.

Why is it such a bad thing?

Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
