Oh well, you cannot expect high end quality for these prices, but
value for money they cannot be beaten easily, unless with a bit of
luck and knowledge on ebay for a used instrument. BTW, best value for
money seems the straight horseshoe monoculars on ebay, seldom
something wrong with, never expensive. But a binocular is of course
nicer in (long) use.
Anyway, this is more or less a professional list, Lomo with it's older
designs are not appreciated very much. Nevertheless, most amateurs
prefer used scopes from the '50-'70's for their mechanical qualities.
The Lomo multiscope uses Zeiss design lenses from the prewar era
(short barrel). They perform very well in their class (achromatic), no
doubt about that. You can of course fit in other lenses, but newer
lenses are generally longer, which means that you have to screw up the
tube quite a bit. (but refocussing is almost always a necessity when
mix and match different makers objectives).

Main reason for my rec for Lomo over similar quality chinese imports
is that if you want to upgrade your scope in a couple of years with a
trino head, phase contrast, other condensers etc, Lomo makes those
parts. You cannot be sure about the asian imports, if they have them
at all.

Anyway, the used market is there as well, and if you can get it via a
reputable dealer, no pain. Depending on where you are see eg
http://www.martinmicroscope.com/Specials%20Page.htm for a nice Leitz
SM. It will perform as well as a multiscope, and the oldies bring in a
bit of character imho.

HTH, Rene.
