Are you trying to do a morphological study of surface properties of hairs?
If yes, you will need a decent 100x oil immersion lens or at least polarized
light and a 40x APO lens with NA 0.95. But more importantly, you need to
correctly prepare your hair samples before observation. You may want to use
the ROX method by H. Reumuth [1]. Or contact the McCRONE Group at
http://www.mccrone.com/ for help.
There is no cheap microscope that is suitable for morphological studies of
surface properties of hairs. You may want to glance through [2] for some
ideas.
