I'm on a mailing list for some microscopy related journals, and have noted
that scale bars included with electron micrographs are being labelled in
"mm" (in the accompanying text), presumably to indicate a micro-metre. I
always thought that a "mm" = millimetre, and that professional printers had
easy access to the Greek letter "mu". Am I noticing sloppy use of a spell
checker, or simply that printers no longer employ people with any knowledge
of units. Or could it be that text & images are being supplied via
text-based email where "mu"s are more difficult to deal with?
