Rather than a Compound microscope with high magnification, look at some
of the stereo scopes also shown on Ebay. Often, a mineralogist does not
need very high magnifications, and these scopes are more than adequate.
Some come with raised stages so you can use either reflected or transmitted
light. One of mine has both.
Note, however, that many ebay sellers have no idea of the distinction
between binocular and stereo- microscopes. You need to look at the photos.
