Re: microtome

Hello,

Yes that is the one and it seems to be in good condition and complete.
You may have to be patient to find one at the price I mentioned.. A
few are auctioned each week. Some sellers ask more and other less.
It is also being sold at auction and the price will depend on
competition. The microtomes come in all different states of
completeness.. Look for ones with the sample holders and knife
holders. If you get the blade so much the better. Additional blades
come up with the same eBay search. Most used blades will not be in
perfect shape for the best sections with this type of microtome . You
will have to sharpen them yourself or send it our for professional
sharpening which costs about $65-$80. These blades are $300-$500
new.

Here are some completed eBay auctions for your reference.

For many years the AO820 and its clones were THE standard in all the
labs. They are extremely rugged. They are cheap now only because so
many were made and are now being replaced. The 820's will handle
parafin embedded tissue samples down to 4-5 microns which is about as
thin as a parafin section can be cut even though the microtome can be
set for thinner sections..

The booklet by American Optical "Effective Care and Use of the
Microtome" (long out of print and extremely scarce) was scaned into
Adobe pdf format and can be found at

Also look for "Section cutting in Microscopy" by H. F. Steedman
available in the same format at the same site

Good luck.
