Charles, Lets go back. The microscope you describe is poor at best. A
used Wild stereo will last and perform well for 40(!) years at least. This
is true for all the major makers. Buying third best never does you any
good.

Now as to how a good microscope operates. It works 'cause everything fits
all the time. Nothing is ever sloppy. Parts are made from the correct
metal, not it's first cousin. Glass is cut correctly, not almost.

Charles, look, microscope sales are highly completitive, if a better way to
build one can be found its used immediately. Scientist know how to pinch a
nickel until the buffalo...well you know. I only saw one scientist buy a
Swift which promptly became useless.
