Hello Andy,

Thank you for your responses. I am curious to know if you were aware
of a post by Klaus Henkel describing the special character of the
"diffuser" element in the illuminating system of Zeiss microscopes
when you formulated the respones to my question?

The diffuser surface is produced by etching the surface with
hydrofluoric acid. I posted an image showing the surface in
microscopic detail. The image reveals that the surface of the
difuser is a covered with a myriad of random sized (approx .01mm -
.05mm) hollows. The surface is more like the compound eye of an
insect than a standard ground glass surface.

Does this revealation alter your analysis in any way?

I did see this image, and it doesn't change anything- it's a clever technique for producing a diffuser element, AFAIK. Leica uses a diffraction grating that (they claim) makes an image of the filament shifted 1/2 coil diameter in a vertical direction, so the total image is more uniform (the bright part of the diffracted image is on top of the dim part of the real image). Whatever!
