It is Japanese and the contrast on all I have used is poor but building a good lighting system will help that. A better eyepiece might surprise you it did on my cheap Meteopa with no condenser.

You may want to hang on to it for the same reason I got the Meteopa to take to the felid and not worry too much about what happens to it.

The Japanese Swift company did make some fairly good scopes but mostly for the low end student market.

You can still do a great deal with the scope just don't play in the diatom game form pond life with digital cameras you can hold your own you will need to learn to do a bit more with software to enhance you contrast and hide and flaw but for most work you can do as well as most of and better than some if you try. Look at ImagJ http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/ and paint shop pro http://store.corel.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&currency=USD&jspStoreDir=CorelUS&partNumber=OL_PSP9&catalogId=10103&ddkey=SetCurrencyPreference $119 Combine Z5 free http://www.hadleyweb.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.htm

Most of the problems of the Swift accept resolution can be fixed with software. And most problems only are serious with the 100x oil immersion lens. The one most of us use the least.

I assure that not just anyone can spend $30,000 on equipment and get better result in the first week than you can. Now if it happens to be Gregor you will be beat pretty fast.

It is not the tools but the person using them that makes the picture. In your case if I was serious about microphotography I would look at upgrading as I could afford it but If I was only interested in pond dipping and the scope suited you I would not trade up if I needed other things or a good opportunity presented its self.

Why don't you join us on the Yahoo microscope group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Microscope/
We have a heated discussion going on right now over a mosquito wing scale and long thread about stacking image for greater depth of field. But as we were all beginner once we try very hard to help them.
We do get in to argument about mine is better then yours among ourselves but I think you will find us less hostile then net news though at times I wonder.
