Re: Rmoving oil inside objective

I've a way out idea that presumes the objective is now of *ZERO VALUE* !
It presumes it is assembled *WITHOUT* glue *OR* non-metallic 'gaskets'.

Does anyone know of methods for removing immersion oil from inside an

accumulated internal oil after years of use on an inverted scope.
After determining the cost and schedule of repair by Nikon, we opted to
replace the original objective with a used one. I still have the
contaminated objective, and would like to try cleaning it in-house if
there's a reasonable approach. It seems to me that if oil can get in,
so can a much lower vicosity solvent. I'm considering cycling solvent
in and out by the alternate appilaction of positive and negative
pressure, followed by drying in a warm oven. Does this seem
reasonable? Ant other Ideas? I haven't seriously considered
disassembly, since I have know idea how to do it and I'm afraid
accurate reassembly would be extremely dificult.

Thanks!

Jon

I take my inspiration from a supervisor of ~40 years ago when I was an Instrument Tech for the Chemistry Dept at Cornell. He annually confounded new staff and students by washing electronics for several mass specs ( particularly HV sections ) under tap water. [ several distilled water rinses and careful drying followed ;]

I would take Jon's logic a step further.
1. Immerse objective in a solvent that is particularly good for the oil involved. The volume of solvent should be very large compared to volume of objective. Let diffusion take its course.
2. Place objective in vacuum chamber which is *SLOWLY* pumped down. I'm thinking that a mechanical roughing pup would be sufficient. Let sit under Vacuum for some time.

Repeat 1 and 2 as required ;)

*DID I NOT SAY* "I've a way out idea that presumes the objective is now of *ZERO VALUE* !" ??????
