I'm one of those difficult people that are never really happy with a prescription.
I've just been to a new optometrist. He is a screener for an ophthalmologist to whom I had been referred when I thought I saw symptoms of a detached retina -- I DO NOT have a detached retina.
I later had him do a refraction. As I had been "HYPER" on the possible detached retina problem and the first indication of a cataract that he had found, I had not confused the issue with the information that my time is spent with long distance driving ( ~80,000 miles/yr and computer screens when at home ).
The result was an *EXCELLENT* prescription for things I do at home.
It was *TOTAL DISASTER* for driving.
When I identified this problem my *OPTICIAN*, who has dealt with me for the last 15 years, had a good laugh.
He told me that he has many customers who have two pair of glasses. One for around the house. One optimized to 600' for hunting.
Is there a formula for adjusting correction depending on preferred distance?
I fall into the worst 5% category for tolerance of error in astigmatism correction. [ I was almost 30 when a *pediatric* optometrist identified my problem.]
I drive primarily at night.
Does either have any bearing?
Thank you for tolerance and any useful suggestions.
Been there, done that.

I'm the Jim in the article. Since the subject is OT, feel free to contact me via email regarding it. You may want your opto to let you look through trial lenses outside at a distance and further refine the prescription.
Driving at night has a great deal to do with it. The iris in your eye is wide open and depth of field is minimal. You need a prescription that puts infinity at almost the center of the "sweet spot" in your vision once you have your glasses on.
It boggles my mind that most opto's don't have a clue as to all of this...
