How to permanent mount crystals?

Hello,
What mounting medium is used to make permanent crystal (chemical) slides?
Dry mounting results in loose powder, wet mounting results in dissolving the
chemicals again.

I saw perfect 19th century slides with crystals, but how were they mounted?
Greetings,
Peter
