I play the file using Winamp and DivX 5.0.5 Decoder Filter, you don't need to use any MS player.

A DivX Play Bundle (incl. codec) can be downloaded e.g. from "http://www.divx.com/";

I don't know if there are any better codec, or if the newer version has spyware, but I have run The freeware* version of Ad-Aware ("http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/";) and it did not find any DivX related spyware.
