Can vintage 210mm B&L tube be shortened to 160mm?

Just wondering and not sure I'd do it but... Could the tube on an
older academic/student? B&L monocular microscope be shorten from what
I'm assuming to be 210mm (maybe) to 160mm and then be able to function
using 160mm TL objectives?
