What about a stereo zoom like Oly SZH, SZH-10 or SZX-9/12 with trinoc
port? These do a nice job of stereo photo subjects. The other option
is macro lenses for SLRs. He didn't say what the specific subjects
were in order to make a more informed recommendation. Lighting is a
critical issue IMO for stereo work. I use a combination of fiber
optic ring light plus one or more bifurcated polarizer bundles. So he
needs to look at the scope, lighting and camera. I figure $1800 is
not going to work as a budget price point.

Either way, I don't recommend an SLR for microscopy. It can be done
but the results can be disappointing and difficult to achieve.
