Thanks to this thread I now understand the difference between depth of
field and depth of focus. In fact, I now understand there IS a
difference between the two :-)

Anyway, you may have found it already but this is a pretty lucid
description. It doesn't necessarily help you derive the equation you're
looking for, but it might give you new keywords and ideas for further
