All great posts! My thought is that it is less the country than the
company. Right now Leica is going through a transition, they were bought by
an American company so there is a bit of a change. Still, if I wanted a
hight quality stereo Leica is the only thing I'd look at.
Manufacturing is spread out everywere. Zeiss has a plant in the maciadora
part of northern Mexico, Olympus, Nikon and Leica have production plants in
China and Leica has another production facility that is in Singapore. The
Phillipines has an Olympus plant that makes the CX-31.
The big 4 still are the big time producers. Over the years communications
have gotten so good that placing a plant outside the main country is
relatively easy, the real problem is design. You have to have the research
capacity or you produce nothing of value, witness the third rate Chinese
production like Red Wall I and II.
If I were you I'd buy used and infinity corrected since the money you have
is relatively large. Remember, me and everyone else loves to spend your
money!
