Re: If these lenses are in good shape, this was one heck of a buy!

I completely agree with your assessment. I would not be surprised learning
that the better quality objectives of this scope suffer under serious issues
(delamination, fungal growth etc.)
I recently purchased a Leitz APO 40x NA 0.95 with a correction collar from a
reputable seller who also sells frequently books about microscopy, such as
The Petrographic Microscope.
The part was described as well working. I got the part for roughly $100,
which is rather cheap. The lens is crap. It has a good resolution when used
with very strong illumination but it has a very poor contrast. You can
already notice the poor contrast when looking through it against a bright
surface. Compared to my other Leitz lenses, it just does not qualify to be
mounted on my good old Ortholux. I am convinced that this particular seller
knew about this and sold it anyway as a great lens. So much for what is
advertised as "great" or "excellent" on eBay. It means nothing. Absolutely
nothing.
BTW, why did I keep the lens and did not write a nasty reply to the
seller? - Well, most sellers retaliate and I just did not want to have my
rating screwed up due to this purchase. Sending the lens back? - The effort
plus paying for shipment both ways made also this alternative look less
interesting. The lens is now used as a demonstration objective to show
interested folks how an older Leitz lens with a correction collar looks
like. It's also used as a fancy paperweight. - But most of us have gone
through something similar when purchasing junk on eBay. The pearls on eBay
that sell for a ridiculously low amount are very rare.
