Thanks, Aaron, this answers the question quite well.
My description of the intermediate lens ass'y may have been a bit
misleading, in that there is no actual slider as shown on other models,
but only a slot where a filter can be slipped in. It is gray and, I
think, original to the scope.
An aperture stop on a piece of acetate, placed in this slot, seems to
answer my needs and is certainly the cheaper option, or maybe the only
option, for darkfield.
I don't understand why the original light bulb was low voltage with a
bulky transformer. Maybe that was the best option in those days for
varying light intensity. I am using a 30 W, 110 V bulb controlled with
a small in-line dimmer such as found at Home Depot, etc.
