Look for a copy of "Collecting, Preserving and Studying Insects" by
Harold Oldroyd, 1958 on one of the pot of print bookseller sites.

www.alibris.com
This is a basic manual for all that you want.

What is a good way to preserve an insect so it will not deteriorate? I.
want to be able to observe it under the microscope later this summer. I
am interested primarily in the external structure of the insect, not in
examining its internal organs. The critter in question is a tiny
firefly (~5 mm long) that glows with a continuous blue light. (I don't
have the scientific name handy.)
I would prefer to keep it dry. Would moth crystals (either type) or
something similar work? I'm not likely to be able to get another
specimen this year.
TIA
