Thanks, Gregor. That should do the trick. I concur with you about the
value of Gordon's website; I've downloaded many documents from there in
the past, but it didn't occur to me to check it this time.
Aaron, thanks for the reference. Since I'll be doing this more often in
the future, I might as well try to find the book now.
BTW, the firefly in question is Phausis reticulata. When large numbers
of them are in flight in the forest, it is one of the most enchanting
sights I've ever seen. They fly close to the ground (~1 - 2 feet), and
they don't flash - their bluish glow persists for about a minute at a
time. The females don't fly, so when their established woods are
destroyed, they don't come back. As a result, they are becoming scarce.
At our friend's 130 acres, they still come out in large numbers; I've
seen them in the thousands, and Don says that he has seen them even
more numerous in the past.
