I am not quite sure what to make of Kevin's statement that "then,
mercifully, they were put to sleep"!
I have owned a AO Stereostar 570 microscope for many years. It is very
sturdily and reliably buildt and gives wonderful images. To judge from
this one product, we should be sorry that AO no longer exists to supply
us with instruments! Or am I mistaken and my AO Stereostar is not as
great as I think it is or may be it is the only good scope AO ever buildt?
It might be interesting to hear some opinions regarding this subject.

I'd like some advise on a stereo microscope for use with mineralspend
micromounts.
Requirements are 10x to 30x power at least. 40X would be nice. I can
in the neighborhood of $400, no more.also
So far I've found some used AO scopes in that price range. The Lomo is
available in that price range. The Lomo does come with illuminaters andmore
than enough magnification options, and its new. I looked at OpticalPlanet.
Any feedback on that company?
I think LOMO sort of stands for Leningrad Optical and Mechanical
Organisation? I've had one of their biological microscopes for many
years.
Some design flaws, but quite well made, and their accessories were
available
and fitted.
I also have a Bausch & Lomb x7 to x30 Stereozoom 4 which seems generally
excellent, except at the highest powers, say from 25-30x. Did AO merge
with
/ take over Bausch & Lomb?
I've made different illuminators for mine, using both LEDs and halogen
lamps.

the early '90's. Now they make things like safety goggles. They then
became Cambridge, Reichert and Leica then, mercifully, they were put to
sleep.
