Well, at risk of being loughed at, I would solve the problem by getting
a
step-down
transformer 220 to 110 Volts. This will add one more box to your setup,
but
will not
require any modification of the original equipment, be inexpensive and
could
be done
by anybody who knows how to connect electrical wires.

Thank's for the suggestion, its the most logical. We've already considered
it but the voltage isn't the only problem. The unit uses a obsolete
tungsten bulb that is virtually impossible to replace since it doesn't
have
a number and does not match any photos of bulbs. I've contacted several
sources of specialty bulbs and no one has ever seen this one.

But where's your image of the bulb? And its holder, with some dimensions.
(It's just [remotely?] possible that I may have bought one a few years ago
for my metallurgical version of the microscope. And I might know the UK
supplier.)

And if you do go down the transformer route, remember that the nominal
voltage in the UK is higher than yours in the US, unless "animal rescue
groups" use special voltages <g>.
