I have looked on the net for a couple of hours and all I found were led
lights with many leds in a ring. There is one article at
http://www.micrographia.com/articlz/artmicgr/lmpideal/lmpi0500.htm

The author hopes someone will make a good single led system for Kohler
illumination with an LED. Anyone know of a commercial product or is it a
roll your own project.

Joel

You are referring to some LED lights with many LEDs in a ring. Are these the
LEDs which are commonly referred to as "star LEDs" and which are now sold
in large numbers as the source of light for all kinds of flash lights?

Does anybody know how these star LEDs are constructed? Do they emply one
light emitting diode or many?

Could these new light sources not be useful for Nelsonian illumination,
where
the light source is depicted into the sample and a diffuser is used?

Thank you
G.R.

Hi

In case of interest some enthusiasts have shared LED lighting projects
for some older scopes recently in 'Micscape' (microscopy hobbyists'
e-zine), including using the 'Star LED' (http://www.luxeonstar.com/).

eg see these articles:

Taking microscopes from the stone age with high wattage LEDs (Wild M40
retrofitted)

Using high power LEDS in epi-illuminator systems (Olympus BHM as
example)

An inexpensive LED cold light (ingenious battery powered portable cold
light source by uprating the LED in the USB LED lamps on goose necks
sold for laptops).
