What is the difference?

Dear Group,
For some time I have used a Nikon Trinocular with 45 degrees
inclination and no magnification. It is part of the Nikon S-series
of microscopes and I use it on these instruments. With this
trinocular there is no difficulty getting a sharp image of the phase
rings using a phase telescope.
Recently I acquired a Nikon Trinocular belonging to the same
series of Nikon scopes. It offers a 30 degree inclination and a
magnification of 1.25. Centering the phaserings with a phase
telescope is difficult because the rings appear very fuzzy.
The images seen with the help of this trinocular however
are as sharp as they should be in brightfield as well as in
phase contrast mode.
Why would the extra magnification of the second trinocular
interfer with the visibility of the phaserings through the
phase telescope?
G.R.
