I need to find information on how to lubricate an Olympus trinocular BH2
BHS microscope. The trinocular head needs lubricating and I don't know what
type of lubricant to use or exactly how to. I might also need to lubricate
the parts that move the stage up and down. Where can I get a manual on
Olympus BH2 microscope service? I need to do the basic maintenance.

Ok, after running around Macon, Ga in a frog choking rain, lets finish this
project!

To relubricate the coarse-fine mechanism first take of all of the accesories
including the stage-condenser holder. Remove the ends of the coarse-fine
focus, its thick paper held on with rubber cement, use a sharp probe or a
tiny screwdriver. There are allen head screws on both sides. Take the
appropriate wrenchs (plural) and put one in each screw head. Now turn
counter-clockwise similtaneously. The screws will feel like they both came
loose, they didn't one came loose but you don't know which one. Keep
loosening until the screw comes loose. Remove both.

You now have a long shaft that drives the fine focus and a plastic gear that
is the fine focus gear. On the left hand side is a wavy spring and a
plastic washer on a bronze fitting, on the other side is a set of gears held
in place by two V head screws and a rounded screw attached to a bronze
plate.

Raise the focus mechanism all the way up from the front and watch it drop.
If it doesn't drop or drops slowly will determine what else needs to be
fixed. Make a mental note.

Now clean of the fine focus rod with heptane or lots of acetone. Be
carefull with the acetone and don't get it on plastice. It likes to eat
plastic. The rod is chrome steel. Clean out the holes in the bronze
fittings on both sides. I use a cuticle brush that you can get real cheap
at a nail goods store, ask your wife.

Relubricate the shaft with a little 111. Clean the plastic parts and
relubricate with light lubricant. Clean of the washer and spring washer and
lubricate with the light lubricant.

If the decended slowly then remove the six tiny screws on the back plate.
You will see a reduction gear assembly that looks like a rectangle. Remove
all four allen head screws (2.5mm I think). Take at least 17 pictures of it
because you need to remember how it looks when you reassemble it.

The gears are bronze and they ride on chrome steel rods. Remove the rods by
untightening the screw that hold the gears. A turn and a half will do. Now
take a small rod and use the rod to get the pin out. Do this for each gear.
There are two plastic washers for the two gears, remove these for cleaning.

Clean the rods, washers and gears. Relubricate the gears with 111 on the
gear face. Lubricate everything else with light lubricant. Now
re-assemble.

Put the gear box back in the correct orientation and put back the four allen
heads loosely. Push down on the gear box firm but not to tight and tighten
up the allen heads.

Re-assemble the fine focus and check everything. Put back all the
decorative pieces and your finished!

Thanks,

Kevin Cunningham
