I purchased a Zeiss Phase Contrast Microscope and I am interested in
learning more about the objectives.
The Zeiss objectives are labeled: PH1 F-LD. Are these good objectives?
I've seen PH1, PH2, and PH3 objectives. I know PH is the abbreviation for
Phase Contrast. What does the number after the PH mean?
What does the F abbreviation stand for?
Phase contrast was developed by Fritz Zernike who won the Nobel prize in
1953. The numbers on the objective should correspond to numbers on the
condenser. So when you are using a phase contrast 2 objective you will have
2 on your condenser and the condenser will be centered. This is each
manufacturers way or identifying the objective to condenser match. This
also refers to NA. There is no international match criteria but this is the
system nearly universally used. The only exception I can remember was AO
used colors.
