Any idea why the size of the phase rings were not standardized?

Kindly learn that nearly nothing (!) in microscopical technique and
hardware is standardized.

The size of the phase rings depends on the aperture of the objective
and on the kind of image which the manufacturer wants to offer to the
user. The manufacturer must decide, which phase-objects with which
properties shall be visible - with which intensity.

The resulting image depends on the size, the material of the
ring-layer (coal or metal), the thickness of the ring and its
broadness ... and wether the phase imagabe should be positive or negative.

There are very much details on which different mic designers and users
in science and industry would have to agree, a task hopeless from the
very beginning. Difference in design and technical details are
important features of a manufacturer, and for user's intentions and goals.
